It’s weird, most places didn’t change the whole title – but they did.” He shrugs, as if to say that whatever French network TF1 does is fine by him – after all, they’re helping pay for his trip to Europe. His wife, Gina, is chatting with his PR at the next table; Petersen has cannily brought her along for the promotional ride. “We’ve been having a good time,” he says. “I took her to the Tower, we’re going to hit the Tate tomorrow. We’ve seen a lot of theatre.”
Petersen himself is an experienced stage actor and, since leaving his on-screen role in CSI last year, has returned to the renowned Steppenwolf Theatre Company in his native Chicago. “I hadn’t been able to do any theatre for 10 years because of the show, and I thought, if I don’t do it, I’ll never do it,” he says. “I didn’t want to become afraid to do theatre.” His two roles since leaving CSI – in Conor McPherson’s Dublin Carol, at the Steppenwolf, and David Harrower’s Blackbird, also in Chicago – stretched acting muscles long neglected on the TV show. “It’s a three-dimensional world in the theatre,” he says. “TV is a two-dimensional world.”
Two-dimensional it may have been, but CSI was Petersen’s world for the best part of a decade. He misses his former colleagues, and he retains an executive producer credit. Though that, he says, means the occasional visit to the set to check all is well, rather than running things. “If I was going to do that, I’d have stayed on the show. The show has to find its own legs, without those of us that have left,” he says, referring to original cast member Gary Dourdan (Warrick Brown), who has also departed.
Season 10 starts on Five on Tuesday, with Catherine Willows (Marg Helgenberger) now the lead investigator. She can only take on so much of Grissom’s paterfamilias role, so Matrix star Laurence Fishburne was brought in when Petersen left to provide a bit of butch gravitas. But his character, Dr Langston, is still learning the ropes as a CSI, and can’t replicate Grissom’s Yoda-esque wisdom. This leads to a very different on-screen dynamic – about which Petersen is diplomatic. “I try to stay out of… I try to do what Grissom would do, which is not judge it,” he says.
What he does lament is the profusion of forensic science shows on US TV, with CSI now having three outlets (including spin-offs Miami and NY) and NCIS two (its spin-off, NCIS: Los Angeles, debuted to huge ratings in autumn last year). “There’s gonna come a time where we’re gonna yearn for Angela Lansbury,” he says. “And we may be there.”
Though he earned a reputed $600,000 (£375,000) an episode, Petersen doesn’t seem to be longing for his days on the CSI treadmill. In person, he’s relaxed and handsome, with a Hollywood bronze tan and striking silver hair. For now, he says, he’s not looking for another network show. Projects must be well-written, not well-paid. “I never did the TV show for money, money’s not the issue,” he says. “I have more money than I ever thought I’d have, and it takes a certain amount of stress off you. I can work at the Steppenwolf and I don’t have to worry about paying my bills.”
If the right project came along, he says he’d love to work in the UK: he speaks fondly of shows such as Prime Suspect. “The Helen Mirren thing was as good as TV gets,” he says, and points out that the procedural format of CSI was very restrictive. “It would be fun to work on stuff that has character in the forefront.”
That’s not to say, though, that Petersen has left Grissom behind forever: one day, he could turn up in London. “We may have to save that for the movie,” says Petersen. “Where we get to deal with some characters from Scotland Yard. Grissom could be on vacation.”
And as William Petersen escorts his wife away to a nice lunch in the West End, that scenario is not hard to imagine. Grissom may be gone for now, but he’s definitely not forgotten.

With two of my favorite shows returning tonight, my hands are almost shaking from all this pent up excitement. Well, it’s either that or the 12 cups of hot chocolate (those mini-marshmallows are brutal) that I drank today. It’s as simple as this; Supernatural is returning tonight and Supernatural is awesome.

Man killed in blaze at MEP’s Darlington home
AN elderly man has died in a fire at the County Durham home of a North East Member of the European Parliament (MEP).
The body of the man, who was in his eighties, was discovered at the home of Stephen Hughes MEP in Darlington.
Neighbours said they believed the dead man to be Jim Beaver, the father of Mr Hughes’s American-born wife Cyndi.
Durham Police said that they were unable to name the dead man until he had been formally identified.
Mr Beaver lived in an annex attached to the Labour MEP’s Victorian home in Oakdene in the County Durham town.
Neighbour Maggie Hasselby said: “Jim was one of life’s larger-than-life characters, a lovely man.
“He moved across from America to be with Cyndi and her family.”
Mrs Hasselby’s daughter Laura roused Mr Hughes and his two children when they saw smoke billowing from the property at around 7am on Christmas Eve.
Mrs Hughes was not at home at the time. Police and fire service have launched an investigation into the cause of the blaze. Neighbours were evacuated from their homes as a precaution.
Mr Hughes, the son of a miner, was born in Sunderland in 1952 and raised in Haswell Plough, County Durham.
He was educated at St Leonard's in Durham City and St Bede's in Lanchester. He attended Leeds University and Newcastle Polytechnic. He is the father of Gareth, Victoria, Elizabeth, Amelia and James. His wife is a Darlington borough councillor.

Dennis Dexter Haysbert was born on 2 June in USA California. His father was a sheriff and his mother was a housewife. He is the eighth of nine children in his family. A congenital heart disease prevented him from playing vigorous sports until high school. He was offered various athletic scholarships but he decided to go to an acting school instead. He is a graduate of Pasadena’s American Academy Of Dramatic Arts. Haysbert married Lynn Griffith but the relation didn’t last long. He had two children with her but at present he is divorced. He is an actor by profession. He is one of the black celebrities who have donated a lot to Barack Obama for fund raising.
He has been acting in film and television since 1979. He began his career by a guest role in The White Shadow. He is also known for playing Nelson Mandela in Goodbye Bafana. In addition to his acting Haysbert has also done voice work for various video games. He has excelled at portraying everything from detectives to presidential candidates. He believes that his role as Senator David Palmer, an African-American presidential candidate, in the television series 24 helped clear Obama’s way to become the president. He has appeared in Absolute Power, Random Hearts and Far From Heaven among others. In 2005 he returned to the big screen by the film Jarhead as the gruff. And in 2006 he reentered the television world by the CBC’s anti terrorism series The Unit.

2010 PCA amFAR Tournament: Qualifier's title, charity the big winner
"Poker players have the biggest hearts," Montel Williams said. To stress the point, Daniel Negreanu added: "Poker players are very generous people." It may not be the wider world's view of card players, but in the poker community, very few people would disagree. We've seen before how poker money is given back to good causes, and tonight was a thrilling example.
This was the amFAR and PokerStars.net Charity Tournament, held in the cavernous Imperial Ballroom in Atlantis, home for this and much of next week to the PCA. Stars of television, the music industry, glamour, sport and poker turned out, giving their money and their time to play an event to raise cash and awareness for amFAR's vital AIDS research program. None had a problem turning over the $5,000 entry fee. Team PokerStars Pro William Thorson even bought in twice after busting early.
They stars were joined by five PokerStars qualifiers who won their seats in various online satellites to be here. As it turned out one them, Spencer Benjafield, took the title, beating Team PokerStars Pro Alex Gomes after a sensational heads-up battle that turned the match on its head.
Benjafield got $37,500 for his first place, but the real winner was amFAR. With a total prize pool of $195,000, half was given straight to the charity, represented here by its chairman, and well-known designer Kenneth Cole. That means at least $97,500 will go to AIDS research. I say 'at least', because as is so often the case, much of the prize money won tonight will be quietly donated by the players as well.

Once they got down to business there were four tables playing a shootout format. With 5,000 starting chips they would play each table until just two players were left. Stampede player's book could hit the silver screen
Between basketball contracts, Idaho Stampede center Lance Allred writes. And writes. And writes some more.
His first book, an autobiography called "Longshot: The Adventures of a Deaf Fundamentalist Mormon Kid and his Journey to the NBA" is bring re-released in paperback this May, and Allred told me there are on-going negotiations to make the story into a movie.
Allred also told me there have been suggestions as to which hollywood celebrity would play the 6'11" basketball player.
"I like to think my features are good enough for the silver screen, but they suggessted two guys. One was Chris Klein, the guy from American Pie, the other one is Jared Padalecki from Supernatural," Allred said.

CHICAGO – Jack Bauer (Kiefer Sutherland) returns tonight in the eighth season premiere of one of the most influential shows of the ’00s, the often-brilliant “24”. At its best, FOX’s “24” is visceral entertainment, an adrenalin-pumped hour often unmatched by its many copycats. Unlike most programs in their eighth season, the first four hours of the new “24” often features the program at its best.
Jack may have tried to retire from life in the anti-terrorism game but, as someone says to Bauer in the first episode, “You’re the guy who always does the right thing.” That’s clearly the main charm and draw of the show and always has been. If our safety is on the line, we all want to think we have “the guy who always does the right thing” on our side. “24” opens with a calm, family-oriented Jack but he’s back in full form before the bottom of the first hour.
How does a show that has had as many explosive opening arcs as “24” top itself this late into its run? Wisely, the writers of “24” realize that this is not the goal. If every day was crazier and more over-the-top, Jack Bauer would be fighting terrorists on the moon by now. Instead of merely turning up the volume, the writers of “24” have created very individually contained seasons, much like each James Bond film stands as its own adventure. The influence of “24” is in the way the producers have never delivered something that looks “like TV”. With theatrical film quality production values and storytelling, each season of “24” has been practically like a feature film in serial form.
One of the more interesting aspects of “24,” and a way that the creators of the show have been able to keep it fresh, has always been the revolving door of the supporting cast with great performances from actors like Dennis Haysbert, Gregory Itzin, and Carlos Bernard in past seasons. Really, the only ensemble members guaranteed to stay the same are Sutherland and Mary Lynn Rajskub as Chloe. Another familiar face or two may pop up (Elisha Cuthbert guest stars in the premiere), but an influx of new stars always injects life into the start of a new season.
This year’s new faces include Mykelti Williamson (“Forrest Gump”) as the head of CTU New York and Katee Sackhoff (“Battlestar Galactica”) and Freddie Prinze Jr. (“Scooby Doo”) as CTU employees. Benito Martinez (“The Shield”) appears as an informant who sets the plot for the eighth very long day into motion. He arrives with intel about a potential assassination plan for a Middle Eastern leader (Anil Kapoor of “Slumdog Millionaire”) who is on the verge of signing a peace agreement with the U.S. President (Cherry Jones). The quality in the new ensemble varies with Kapoor easily making the most initial impact while Prinze Jr. is still a bit unconvincing as a member of the CTU team. Sackhoff plays a woman with a mysterious past, but sometimes appears to be a bit of a distraction to the main plot, but one assumes she will play a bigger role as the season advances.
The level of detail in just the first hour of this season of “24” is nearly overwhelming. There are so many new faces this season with their own subplots - including a strident new advisor for the President, family problems for her foreign counterpart, and new work subplots among the characters at CTU - that one practically has to take notes to keep up. Action junkies may be turned off by the first hour, one that is ridiculously dense with new characters and conversation, but, of course, they need not wait long until Jack is dodging gunfire and returning his own. And you won’t have to wait until 5pm (this season starts at 4pm) to see something big go boom.
What’s most remarkable to this critic about the opening quartet of “24” is the screenwriting juggling act that this show maintains at its best. The season premiere introduces multiple characters and arcs and yet never feels overcrowded or rushed. “24” is still one of the most expertly paced programs in the history of television, always keeping the viewer entertained but not overwhelmed.
Overall, this is one of the best opening quartets in the legacy of “24”. As we’ve learned in the past, it can be tough to predict how a season of this show will progress. Some have opened strongly and sagged in the middle. Some have taken time to develop after limping out of the gate. But the opening of the eighth season feature such confident writing, interesting new characters, and perfect pacing that I’m personally amped for hour five of this day more than most seasons past. How many shows are even remotely near their peak in their eighth season much less arguably at it? “24” continues to defy expectations.

Jack may have tried to retire from life in the anti-terrorism game but, as someone says to Bauer in the first episode, “You’re the guy who always does the right thing.” That’s clearly the main charm and draw of the show and always has been. If our safety is on the line, we all want to think we have “the guy who always does the right thing” on our side. “24” opens with a calm, family-oriented Jack but he’s back in full form before the bottom of the first hour.
How does a show that has had as many explosive opening arcs as “24” top itself this late into its run? Wisely, the writers of “24” realize that this is not the goal. If every day was crazier and more over-the-top, Jack Bauer would be fighting terrorists on the moon by now. Instead of merely turning up the volume, the writers of “24” have created very individually contained seasons, much like each James Bond film stands as its own adventure. The influence of “24” is in the way the producers have never delivered something that looks “like TV”. With theatrical film quality production values and storytelling, each season of “24” has been practically like a feature film in serial form.
One of the more interesting aspects of “24,” and a way that the creators of the show have been able to keep it fresh, has always been the revolving door of the supporting cast with great performances from actors like Dennis Haysbert, Gregory Itzin, and Carlos Bernard in past seasons. Really, the only ensemble members guaranteed to stay the same are Sutherland and Mary Lynn Rajskub as Chloe. Another familiar face or two may pop up (Elisha Cuthbert guest stars in the premiere), but an influx of new stars always injects life into the start of a new season.
This year’s new faces include Mykelti Williamson (“Forrest Gump”) as the head of CTU New York and Katee Sackhoff (“Battlestar Galactica”) and Freddie Prinze Jr. (“Scooby Doo”) as CTU employees. Benito Martinez (“The Shield”) appears as an informant who sets the plot for the eighth very long day into motion. He arrives with intel about a potential assassination plan for a Middle Eastern leader (Anil Kapoor of “Slumdog Millionaire”) who is on the verge of signing a peace agreement with the U.S. President (Cherry Jones). The quality in the new ensemble varies with Kapoor easily making the most initial impact while Prinze Jr. is still a bit unconvincing as a member of the CTU team. Sackhoff plays a woman with a mysterious past, but sometimes appears to be a bit of a distraction to the main plot, but one assumes she will play a bigger role as the season advances.
The level of detail in just the first hour of this season of “24” is nearly overwhelming. There are so many new faces this season with their own subplots - including a strident new advisor for the President, family problems for her foreign counterpart, and new work subplots among the characters at CTU - that one practically has to take notes to keep up. Action junkies may be turned off by the first hour, one that is ridiculously dense with new characters and conversation, but, of course, they need not wait long until Jack is dodging gunfire and returning his own. And you won’t have to wait until 5pm (this season starts at 4pm) to see something big go boom.
What’s most remarkable to this critic about the opening quartet of “24” is the screenwriting juggling act that this show maintains at its best. The season premiere introduces multiple characters and arcs and yet never feels overcrowded or rushed. “24” is still one of the most expertly paced programs in the history of television, always keeping the viewer entertained but not overwhelmed.
Overall, this is one of the best opening quartets in the legacy of “24”. As we’ve learned in the past, it can be tough to predict how a season of this show will progress. Some have opened strongly and sagged in the middle. Some have taken time to develop after limping out of the gate. But the opening of the eighth season feature such confident writing, interesting new characters, and perfect pacing that I’m personally amped for hour five of this day more than most seasons past. How many shows are even remotely near their peak in their eighth season much less arguably at it? “24” continues to defy expectations.
The eighth season premiere of ‘24,’ which airs on FOX, stars Kiefer Sutherland, Cherry Jones, Freddie Prinze Jr., Anil Kapoor, Mary Lynn Rajskub, Annie Wersching, Chris Diamantopoulos, John Boyd, Mykelti Williams, Katee Sackhoff, and Elisha Cuthbert. The show premieres with back-to-back episodes on January 17th, 2010 at 8pm CST and two more back-to-back episodes air the next night, January 18th, 2010 at the same time.

'Supernatural' Season 6 Talk Resurfaces at TCAs
Every time CW president Dawn Ostroff takes questions from the press, we always get the same debate: will there be a sixth season for Supernatural?
Over the weekend, Ostroff spoke at the January press tour for the Television Critics Association, and once again she was asked whether season 6 is going to happen for Supernatural. While there's little new in her answer, things are definitely looking up for fans who want more Sam and Dean.
Ostroff talked about how pleased she is with the creativity of the writers this season, the boost in ratings, particularly among women, and the fact that Supernatural is a very good fit with the network's newest hit, The Vampire Diaries.
She also talked about creator Eric Kripke. While every fan knows that he came into the show with a five-year plan, Ostroff believes he has more than enough talent and creativity to keep Supernatural going, as does his writing staff. According to her, Kripke is keeping a very open mind about a possible season 6.
None of this should come as a surprise, as the CW is desperate to keep hold of anything that works. The network is struggling with a very week Tuesday night lineup of '90s reboots and a general lack of original programming.
With repeats on Tuesdays and Wednesdays until March, the CW will only be airing five hours of original programming per week for the next two months. That's hardly enough to sustain a major network, so Ostroff is certainly hoping and praying that Supernatural will stick around for another year.

Rossif Sutherland says he 'fought hard' for role in heist comedy 'High Life'
TORONTO — His father may be film and TV icon Donald Sutherland, and his half-brother "24" star Kiefer Sutherland, but that doesn't mean actor Rossif Sutherland has it any easier than his industry peers.
"I don't get offers, I don't get parts like that, so I have to fight for the parts that I get," Sutherland, 31, said in a recent phone interview from his father's house in Quebec's Eastern Townships, where he celebrated Christmas.
"There isn't always a fight in me, but when I'm passionate about something, that little beast wakes up."
Such was the case with "High Life," the latest film from Montreal-born writer-director Gary Yates that opens Friday in Toronto and Winnipeg (it hits Edmonton, Vancouver and Calgary Jan. 22; Ottawa, Montreal, Halifax Jan. 29).
Adapted from the Lee MacDougall play, the sharp comedy follows four drug addicts as they scheme to rob Automated Teller Machines. For the big screen, Yates changed the story from present-day to 1983, when ATMs were just emerging and more easily ripped off.
Timothy Olyphant (HBO's "Deadwood") plays the protagonist, Dick, a junkie who gets his drugs from the hospital in which he works.
Sutherland - who was born in Vancouver and raised in Los Angeles, New York and Paris - plays Billy, a cute, free-wheeling member of the hapless, strung-out clan.
"I really fought hard to (audition for) this part because he was just so enthusiastic, like a kid, really," said Sutherland, heralded for his stirring turn as a troubled boxer in the 2007 film "Poor Boy's Game." He's also had roles on such TV shows as "Monk" and "ER."
Yates held auditions for the role of Billy in Los Angeles. When Sutherland walked in with his handsomely rugged good looks and a husky voice similar to that of his father and half-brother, the director immediately knew he was right for the role.
"He came into the room and just completely blew me away. I thought, 'Who is this guy and why is he talking like that? What is that voice?"' Yates, whose other films include "Seven Times Lucky," said recently over the line from Winnipeg, where he lives.
"He knew exactly how to play it. He smiled and it made me smile, and I just thought, 'This guy is fantastic, I want to know everything about him,' and we hit it off right away.
"The role was his before he walked out of the room. It was just like that and I do see sort of a young (Marlon) Brando in him, a young James Dean."
Yates is now tight with the Sutherland family, even visiting them recently for Christmas Eve dinner at the patriarch's Quebec home.
The director planned to give his host a top-notch bottle of one of his favourite wines, Bordeaux. But when he saw the pricey vino that Donald Sutherland had planned to serve, the Bordeaux went on the backburner.
"As soon as I got in, he went down to the cellar and came up with six bottles of Chateau Lafite Rothschild 1978," Yates said with a howl. "I thought, 'My God ... put the wine back in the car!' It's a completely different world."
Rossif Sutherland said his father "really liked" the Winnipeg-shot "High Life," and had high praise for his role in it.
"My father is probably too generous to me in terms of my acting," said Sutherland. "It seems, and I may be wrong, but he's the one person that I've worked with that gives the impression that I can do no wrong."
The father-son actors got to work together for the first time last spring on the film "The Steal Artist," which doesn't yet have a release date.
The younger Sutherland said it was "a dream" to film a movie with his dad after years of watching him as a child on sets.
"He's been the reason for which I've started a road in this career and he likes to call himself my first fan."
At one point Rossif and Kiefer Sutherland, 43, also talked about collaborating, but on music (Rossif has a MySpace page full of original tunes and Kiefer has the small, independent record label IronWorks).
But the younger sibling realized he wants to keep his music separate from his family.
"It's very much my journey," he said. "Everything that I do is so tied into family - and I'm very proud of that, I'm very comfortable with that at least in my acting career - but the music has been on my own little thing."
